Liverpool have agreed in principle a deal for defender Domagoj Vida from Besiktas, according to A Spor.

The Turkish sports website reports that the Reds have agreed a deal in principle for the Croatian international, lasting two years with the option of a third.

Liverpool now need to meet Besiktas’ asking price of £22.2 million in order to land the centre-back on a permanent basis, and should that be completed, they will be set to win the race for his signature. It now looks as though the Turkish outfit have decided to cash in on Vida as they set about raising funds for their own transfers.

OPINION

This is great news for Liverpool fans if this report claiming that Vida has signed a two year deal in principle is true. However, this saga has been going on for a while and Liverpool have said that they are not in the market for another centre-back. IN fact they’ve repeatedly said they’re baffled by the continuing connection. However, it wouldn’t be the first time a club has denied a transfer and then announced a deal. If it is true, then the club will have performed a major u-turn in their pursuit of the sought-after Croatian. He was a key figure in getting his country to the final of the World Cup, and would partner Virgil Van Dijk excellently in the centre of defence if he is joining. However, this news should be taken with a pinch of salt, and fans should not get too excited by it just yet. Most fans would welcome another centre-back though, especially with Joel Matip potentially facing another lay-off with injury.
