Liverpool have ruled out making a move for Stoke City goalkeeper Jack Butland as well as Barcelona shot-stopper Jasper Cillessen, according to the Times.

The prestigious newspaper claim that Butland and Cillessen are both not seen as being significant upgrades by the Reds on current goalkeeping options Loris Karius, Simon Mignolet and Danny Ward.

The Times report that Klopp has been unsuccessful in his efforts to sign a new No1 so far and will continue to rehabilitate Karius after his high-profile mistakes in the Champions League final.

OPINION

Reds supporters will no doubt be generally relieved to hear that Butland and Cillessen are out of the running to be the Reds’ new No.1 keeper. The Independent previously worryingly reported that Butland was likely to be a Reds player for the upcoming season and that hardly inspired fans as he conceded 63 goals in 36 outings for the Potters in his 2017/18 campaign. The 25-year-old has rightly been deemed not an upgrade on the Reds’ current option. When it comes to pursuing Cillessen it’s more debatable whether he is an upgrade on the current keepers at Anfield. The 29-year-old Barca shot-stopper previously impressed in his career when with Ajax but during the 2017/18 he only featured once in La Liga so it’s hard to assess whether his arrival would have been a good move for the Reds. Don Balon previously claimed that the Reds were willing to pay £52.9million so perhaps he just proved to be too costly a risk.
