Liverpool do not hold an interest in Barcelona goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen despite reports to the contrary, according to a reliable journalist.

James Pearce, Liverpool reporter for the Echo, provided the definitive update on his personal Twitter account on Tuesday, claiming that the Reds had ‘zero interest’ in the 30-year-old Netherlands international.

Reports coming from Spain in the last few weeks have heavily linked Liverpool to a move for Cillessen, with Sport claiming that Barcelona have lowered their asking price to around £26.5million.

Cillessen was Barca’s back-up goalkeeper to Marc-Andre Ter Stegen in the 2017/18 season, with the club winning La Liga and qualifying for the Champions League next term.

OPINION

It is a shame to hear that Liverpool do not hold an interest in Cillessen. The Netherlands international seemingly represents a good option for the Reds as they search for a new goalkeeper, with his vast experience in club and international football coming at a high level. The recent claims that Barcelona are seeking just £26.5million for his services mean that this is a deal which would also represent huge value for money for Liverpool. The club have been quoted ridiculous prices for their other targets, with Alisson seemingly to cost around £70million. Cillessen therefore looks to be a brilliant option, but the club do not look like they will make a move after Pearce’s claims. It will now be interesting to see which targets the club actually do end up pursuing, with deals for Alisson and Jan Oblak looking very much off the table amid huge price tags. The other options available are hugely limited, and it may end up that Loris Karius is still their number one come the start of the season.
