As reported by his Sky Sports colleague Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool will pay Italian side Roma £66.9million to secure the Brazilian’s signature, which would be a world-record transfer fee for a goalkeeper.
The 25-year-old represented his country at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, starting all five of their games as they reached the quarter-final of the tournament before losing to Belgium.
OPINION
The reported £66.9million transfer fee is massive in itself, but for a goalkeeper it’s astronomical. This wouldn’t just beat the world record transfer fee for a goalkeeper, it would smash it. The fee is almost double the £34.7millio that Manchester City paid for fellow Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson last June. Before that, it was Gianluigi Buffon’s £32.6million transfer from Parma to Juventus all the way back in 2001. Keepers are becoming more and more important in the modern game, not just for their shot-stopping or cross catching abilities, but for their quality with the ball at their feed. Ederson’s transfer to City last season was a massive surprise, but the way he plays the ball out from the back and how much he contributed to the team’s success makes the transfer fee seem almost cheap. Alisson will have a lot of pressure on his shoulders now because he will have a lot to live up to, he will have to do what his fellow Brazilian did and more, in order to justify such a massive fee.
