Stan Collymore heaped praise on Liverpool’s Georginio Wijnaldum and claimed the midfielder was currently playing the best football of his career.

The outspoken pundit revealed that he had been impressed by the 5ft 8in tall midfielder (Source: ESPN) this season and shared that he thought Wijnaldum had stepped up to the plate in order to keep summer signing Fabinho out of the team.

“I’d mention Gini Wijnaldum too,” wrote Collymore in his column for the Daily Mirror.

“He has stepped up to the plate, is probably playing the best football of his career and now another new signing Fabinho can’t get in the team.”

Wijnaldum has been at the Reds since 2016 after joining from Newcastle United and has made 94 appearances for the Merseyside giants in total so far.

OPINION

Wijnaldum’s role in Jurgen Klopp’s side often gets overlooked but Collymore takes a moment to give the midfielder the praise he rightly deserves. The 27-year-old has looked very impressive this season so far and has featured in all of the Reds’ first three league games. If Wijnaldum is able to keep up the level of performances he is currently delivering than not only will Fabinho have to worry about getting an opportunity in the first-team but many will have to admit they were wrong about the Dutch midfielder. In the past Wijnaldum has found himself heavily criticised for his performances and several have always opted to make fun of his poor goalscoring record when away from home. However it looks like being the 27-year-old who might end up having the last laugh as he could easily help Klopp’s lift silverware this season if he continues delivering the goods on a consistent basis. Hopefully that ends up being the case for his sake as well as the club’s.
