Liverpool defender Anderson Arroyo has joined Gent on a season-long loan, it has been confirmed by the club’s official website and Twitter.

A deal has been agreed for the 18-year-old to link up with the Belgian outfit for the duration of the 2018/2019 campaign, joining Reds’ striker Taiwo Awoniyi who made the move earlier this summer on loan.

The young enforcer moved to Anfield from Colombian side Fortaleza CEIF in January this year, but was immediately loaned out to Spanish side Real Mallorca upon his arrival.

Arroyo made 13 appearances for the Spanish side’s ‘B’ team in the second half of last season.

OPINION

Arroyo has not made one single appearance for the Reds since his arrival earlier this year, and it seems like the club are intent on giving him multiple loan spells to ensure he gains experience. However, it would be more wise to farm him out to a lower league team in England, as this would allow him to get used to the style of play. Nevertheless, Gent are a good team and he will learn a lot during his stint in Belgium, meaning that he will hopefully come back a better player. Obviously he will not be considered for the first team anytime soon, but that does not mean he cannot attempt to impress Jurgen Klopp when he returns from his loan. Liverpool undoubtedly saw a glimmer of potential when they snapped him up from Colombia, and fingers crossed that he impresses while with Gent. It does not matter that Arroyo has not caught the attention of Klopp just yet – but he is bound to when he comes back to Anfield.
