Talks between Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund regarding the transfer of striker Divock Origi have broken down, according to reliable journalist David Lynch.

Lynch – who is known as a Liverpool correspondent for the London Evening Standard – has claimed on his personal Twitter account that talks have broken down with the Champions League side over a deal for the fringe figure, and that the Reds will now not entertain a loan offer in this window.

The 23-year-old is now set to remain on Merseyside until January at least, when the next window will open for transfers.

The Belgian spent the 2017/2018 campaign on loan at Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg, making 31 appearances.

OPINION

Liverpool are obviously not keen on a loan deal for their striker, and by refusing to entertain any offers for a loan in this window, they are undoubtedly holding out for a cash sum. However, this news will certainly be a bitter blow to Origi, who would have wanted some regular first team football next term. At Anfield, he is not expected to get that with the likes of Mo Salah ahead of him in the pecking order. It looks like he will either be exiled by Jurgen Klopp until January, or he will be used very sparingly in competitions such as the FA Cup or the League Cup. Nevertheless, he evidently does not feature in Klopp’s plans for the forseeable future, otherwise he would not have been loaned out last season, as well as being considered to this season. He is a young player and his development cannot be stalled so suddenly – and the fact Liverpool will not loan him out shows that they are not thinking about Origi. He has the potential to be a great striker, but at the moment, that progress has come to a halt.
