Liverpool defender Ragnar Klavan is on the verge of a move to Italian side Cagliari, according to Sky Sports Italy journalist Gianluca di Marzio.

The reporter claims that the transfer is in its final stages, with Jurgen Klopp’s team set to receive a seven figure transfer fee of around £1.78million.

The Estonia captain joined Liverpool from German side Augsburg in 2016, but has been in and out of the team ever since, failing to cement a first team spot at Anfield.

He has now seemingly fallen behind Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Dejan Lovren in the Liverpool pecking order, while centre back Joel Matip is also close to recovering from injury.

OPINION

This is a deal that makes sense for everyone involved. Klavan is likely to drop to fifth choice centre back at Anfield once Matip returns, meaning a transfer away from the club is surely inevitable for the experienced Estonian. The 32-year-old has essentially served his purpose for Liverpool at this point. He wasn’t brought in to be a star centre half, merely to provide depth and experience to a squad that would be competing on multiple fronts, he has done that. But with van Dijk an undisputed starter in one of the two centre back positions, and with Gomez progressing nicely in the other – as well as Lovren who had a terrific World Cup – there is simply no place for Klavan at Anfield anymore. It’s time for him to move on, and Cagliari is as good a place as any. He should get regular first team football, while Liverpool will get his salary off the books. The transfer fee is small, but it was always going to be for an unfancied 32-year-old. This is a deal that should get done soon enough.
