Some Liverpool fans on social media reacted to Jurgen Klopp comparing Liverpool’s chances of battling Manchester City for the Premier League title to iconic movie series ‘Rocky’.

The German manager who regularly likes to use out-of-the-box comparisons to assess his team’s quality grabbed fans’ attention when he opted to use a ‘Rocky IV’ reference to deliver his verdict on the Premier League title race.

“You ask me about the gap with City, we had three points from City and they had three points from us. It’s about losing them in other games,” said Klopp in his press conference ahead of the game v West Ham, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo.

“We have to be in a championship mode. We jump into the water and we dive until we don’t have oxygen anymore. That’s the plan. A lot of people think because of the transfer window we will [challenge more] – but that’s not how it is.

“City – the champions – have not lost a player and brought in Mahrez. They were impressive against Chelsea, both sides were. We are still Rocky Balboa and not Ivan Drago.

“We need to want more and fight more. That must be our attitude.”

Several Reds supporters were amused that Klopp had made the movie reference with one even tweeting that everyone knows how the fight between Rocky Balboa and Ivan Drago ends.

OPINION

It seems some Reds fans have read between the lines and think that Klopp referring to his side as ‘Rocky’ means he is suggesting that they will be successful in their pursuit of the Premier League title. The eccentric German manager claims his side aren’t Ivan Drago and if you’ve watched the iconic movie series then, spoiler alert, you know Rocky ends up beating the Russian boxer in the fourth movie in the collection.  The famous fictional boxer does it in dramatic style so if the Reds end up beating Man City in the same way to the Premier League title then it certainly will make for an exciting season. While several Reds fans understood the comparison and lapped it up because of its potential implications, others amusingly have plans to go watch the famous movie series. Hopefully it gives them as much enjoyment as the Reds’ upcoming 2018/19 campaign does as both should hopefully live up to the hype.
