Chris Sutton shared that he believes Liverpool will qualify from their Champions League group even if he believes it is the toughest one.

The BT Sport pundit revealed that he didn’t understand why the Reds were in pot three after reaching the final of the prestigious competition last season as well as claiming that it was Napoli and Paris St-Germain that should be worried.

“Brilliant group, I mean pot three Liverpool they were in the final last season, I think they will qualify and that it’s a nightmare for Napoli and PSG not for Liverpool,” said Sutton on BT Sport Score (September 1st), as uploaded to the broadcaster’s website.

“It’s the toughest group by a mile, a stretch I’ll say, the fact Liverpool were in pot three doesn’t make sense to me but there are some other cracking groups in there.”

Jurgen Klopp’s team are in Group C alongside PSG, Napoli and Red Star Belgrade with the Reds’ first game in this competition this season being against the French giants at Anfield on September 18.

OPINION

It seems Sutton is very confident that the Reds will be safely getting out of their Champions League group. This is a clear reflection of how highly he must rate Klopp’s side as he appears to think that it’s easily the toughest group in the competition. The Reds defied expectations last season when they stormed all the way through to the final of the tournament and they will no doubt be aiming to go one further. While the Merseyside giants will have one eye on winning the Premier League this season, they will want to still do well in the Champions League. Klopp has a hugely talented squad available to him and should be able to manage competing in both competitions even though they have lots of rivals in both, capable of beating the Reds’ to the trophy. Hopefully Sutton is right with his assessment of the Reds chances in their Champions League group as on paper it does seem like PSG and Napoli will both feel confident about beating the English club to the next round.
