Ryan Giggs has highlighted experience of winning titles as the only thing that is missing for Liverpool as they bid to win the Premier League for the first time.

The Reds are the only team left in the division with a 100% record after six games, with both Chelsea and Manchester City sitting just behind them after one draw each.

Giggs has now highlighted what is missing from Liverpool’s squad in their title bid, but that only came after a major claim about their squad from the former Manchester United star.

In a column for Sky Sports, he said: “From 1-11 there’s probably not been a better Liverpool team in the Premier League – when Raheem Sterling, Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge were on fire they were really impressive but probably overall it looks like a more balanced team now.

“Liverpool haven’t played well in some games but scraped results, which is actually quite scary because if you’re able to do that, that’s championship form, so not only the swash-buckling three or four goals, but digging out results is what you need to do to win it.

“It looks like a case of Manchester City v Liverpool for the title, although you can’t dismiss Chelsea because they’re playing well. Remember just two years ago they were the champions and they’ve got players in that dressing room who know what it takes – Liverpool haven’t got that, but you’ve got to start somewhere and Liverpool have been impressive.”

OPINION

This is a well-balanced and spot-on verdict from Giggs, who has assessed the situation perfectly. Liverpool are managing to dig out results where previously they would have crumbled, and that is the kind of thing that makes champions. The Reds have never had a problem romping to huge wins throughout the season, but it has been games against the smaller sides who set up to frustrate you that have been the problem. Klopp has managed to put together a squad capable of getting through those kind of games with three points, and continuing that will be key for them if they want to win the title. He is also right to highlight a lack of experience of winning things in the squad, but that should not mean too much in the scheme of things. This is a highly-talented squad who have more than enough to challenge for the title, and Klopp is well aware of what it takes himself from his days at Borussia Dortmund.
