Liverpool are sending out scouts to watch Atletico Madrid winger Gelson Martins along with a trio of other Premier League clubs, according to the Daily Star.

The newspaper reports on their website that the Reds have been put on high alert after the attacker impressed in his first months in La Liga, but they face competition from Chelsea, Tottenham and rivals Everton, who are also sending scouts out.

The 23-year-old is currently valued at £30million, but that could be set to rise next summer if he is pounced on by a club after just one campaign playing in Spain.

OPINION

Liverpool have previously been linked to the services of the Portuguese international, but he opted to move to Atletico Madrid despite interest from the Premier League. It comes as no surprise that he has impressed already since his arrival, so it should not come as a shock that several top flight clubs have been put on high alert, even though he has not been in Spain for very long. He is an up and coming talent who has the potential to be one of the best wingers in the game, but Liverpool will have to move fast in January if they are to snap him up ahead of their rivals. He will no doubt have a huge price tag sooner rather than later, and the Reds will have to consider whether it will be worth shelling out the money to sign him. They already have an array of attacking talent at their disposal, so it would remain to be seen where he would fit in amongst the first team. Nevertheless, if the opportunity to sign Martins was put directly in front of them, then they should take it to get the edge over their rivals.
