Former Newcastle United striker Micky Quinn has claimed that Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson is better than Fred, who signed for Man United for £53million, Ander Herrera and Eric Dier.

Henderson, on a reported £100k-per-weeksigned a new long-term contract at Anfield earlier this week, and Quinn believes he would easily get into the Manchester United and Tottenham teams.

“Yeah I definitely think he’d get in United,” he told talkSPORT. “They’ve been struggling. Fred? I mean, what’s he done? He got bombed at the weekend, he hasn’t settled in.

“I think he’s [Henderson] better than Herrera. Matic? No, I think Matic is probably [better]. He’s proved he’s a better player, he’s won Premier Leagues.

“Spurs? Yeah. Well he got in front of Dier at the World Cup so in my book he’d be in front of Eric Dier in Spurs’ team. City, who’s in there? Fernandinho. Again, he’s won Premier Leagues, hasn’t he? So you’ve just probably got to give it to him, just to edge him,” he said.

OPINION

It’s been quite the transformation for Henderson at Liverpool since his tricky early days there. He’s come on leaps and bounds in recent years, and has become the player the club first thought they were signing. Although it’s early days, from what we have seen from Fred so far, there’s no doubt that Henderson is the better player. You’d also pick him over Herrera every day of the week. Matic is a toss up, because while the United man has more natural talent, the Liverpool skipper is a better leader. As Quinn says, Henderson was first choice in midfield ahead of Dier for England at the World Cup, and you could see the difference in the team when the Spurs star was operating in the holding role. Fernandinho, on the other hand, has proved himself to be one of the Premier League’s finest central midfielders. He covers every blade of grass, and does the work of two players in front of that City defence. Quinn is right about the Brazilian being ahead of Henderson at this moment in time. That said, Henderson is a far better leader than any of those players, so Liverpool fans will have no qualms at all about who their midfield general is.
