Former Everton and Manchester United manager David Moyes has claimed that this Liverpool team isn’t the finest iteration the Premier League has seen.

The Reds have drawn numerous plaudits for their 100% start to the season, which continued with a routine 3-0 victory over Southampton on Saturday.

However Moyes prefers some of the previous Liverpool teams: “I think they’ve got a really good team, but I look back at the teams that I played against Liverpool over the years – Liverpool had great teams when it was Alonso and Mascherano and Gerrard, Torres was up front,” he told Goals on Sunday.

“Liverpool had great teams, and this is a good Liverpool team as well. I don’t know if it’s quite as good as that team at that time, but I think they are playing a good style. I think they’ve got forward players who are exceptional and because of that it gives them a real threat,” he finished.

OPINION

The success that Liverpool are having at the moment makes this a controversial statement from Moyes. The former Everton boss clearly rated the Rafael Benitez Liverpool team, and that was a side featuring some terrific players like the ones he’s mentioned. But when you consider the quality right the way through this current Liverpool team, as well as the wonderful players they’re able to bring off the bench, you have to give the edge to theĀ iteration that is sitting top of the Premier League table at the moment. Torres was a phenomenal centre forward for the club, but the trio of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane is without doubt preferable to the Spaniard. Only time will tell whether this Liverpool side are in fact superior to the teams that went close to winning the title under Benitez and Brendan Rodgers, but they’re certainly on the right track so far this season.
