Former Liverpool striker Dean Saunders heaped praise on the signing of Xherdan Shaqiri from Stoke City and shared there wouldn’t be a better buy all season.

The 54-year-old who played 42 times for the Reds shared that he thought Shaqiri was a potential match-winner for his former side as due to the way he plays, he’s always capable of scoring goals.

“He’s signed Keita who looks like he could be a great player, as well as Fabinho and Shaqiri,” shared Saunders, as quoted by the Daily Star.

“So he’s signed four players. Now when you look at the depth in the squad.

“If Salah’s injured, Shaqiri goes in and he can score goals at any level.

“And at £13m you won’t get a better buy all season for a player who’s 26 and won 70-odd caps for his country.

“And the way he plays he can score goals, he can win them games.”

The 26-year-old winger has featured twice for Jurgen Klopp’s side this season and has played a grand total of 27 minutes.

OPINION

Saunders was clearly impressed by how his former club handled themselves in the transfer market and makes a bold claim about the capture of Shaqiri. However it’s a claim that is hard to argue with as the £13million the Reds are thought to have paid for him, does seem like a bargain when you consider the inflated prices floating around the transfer market. Although Saunders may have spoken way too soon as with the January window to come later in the season than who knows what bargains may be uncovered in that window. Though as it stands the Reds’ summer recruit being the best buy of the window, when you take his price into account, is a reasonable statement to issue. Hopefully Reds supporters will soon see more of the 26-year-old as after only featuring for 26 minutes, the best is clearly yet to come. Shaqiri seems to have been signed as cover for the Reds’ first-choice attacking options so it means that he will see plenty of game time at Anfield, he just has to patiently wait for his opportunity.
