Defender Joe Gomez is expected to sign a new Liverpool deal soon as the club are keen to reward his progress, according to the Daily Mirror.

The national newspaper claim that the Reds want to hand the centre-back a contract that will bring his salary in line with other first-team stars and are currently in talks with the defender.

The Daily Mirror report that Jurgen Klopp’s side want to hand Gomez, whose current deal sees him earn £30,000-a-week (Source: Total Sportek), a new deal despite the 21-year-old having four-years left to run on his current contract.

OPINION

Gomez has gotten his 2018/19 season off to a flying start and it’s no surprise that contract talks are underway. The 21-year-old has played every minute of the Reds’ Premier League campaign so far and has stood out despite a lot of his teammates also being in excellent form. Klopp has opted to utilise Gomez in his natural position of centre-back this season and it’s easy to see how comfortable he is in that the role. The Reds youngster also submitted decent performances when deployed as a right-back previously but when in the heart of defence, his game reaches a new level. It seems based on this report by the Mirror, it won’t take long for the Reds to financially reward Gomez as he is expected to agree to new terms shortly which shows his happiness at Anfield. Hopefully the 21-year-old can continue his new form throughout the season following his pay boost as his displays appear to help make the Reds look even more stable at the back currently.
