Jamie Carragher pinpointed two reasons why Liverpool are able to trouble Manchester City ahead of the two Premier League clubs meeting at Anfield on Sunday.

The Sky Sports pundit shared that unlike other teams in the division the Reds actually believe they can beat Manchester City while also revealing that he thought Jurgen Klopp had Pep Guardiola’s number.

Carragher despite stating these two reasons why his former side were able to trouble Man City, he avoided making a prediction and simply claimed that it was a tough game for both sides.

“I think they are the one team in the Premier League who actually believe that they can beat City, I think the most of the division, certainly other teams hope they can beat City but I think Liverpool will be going into the game at Anfield believing they’ll win the game,” said Carragher on Sky Sports News (Friday October 5, 00:32am).

“It’ll be a very tough game for both sides, but the way Liverpool set-up, the way they play, Jurgen Klopp seems to have Pep Guardiola’s number since he come, maybe even back in the Borussia-Bayern Munich days, it’s been quite tight as well.

“I think both managers know they’re in for a game, win that, I think’s huge, points wise of course but physiologically in terms of believing they can win the title.”

OPINION

Carragher may be on to something here as belief is a powerful entity in football and that may aid the Reds’ cause to get a memorable result on Sunday. The Sky Sports pundit is also spot-on to point out that if the Reds overcome their Premier League title rivals then they will have confidence they can win the race to win the league. While the Premier League title isn’t a two-horse race despite it seemingly being treated like one, Chelsea are clearly dark horses, whoever wins Sunday’s clash will hold an advantage despite it being the early stages of the season. The only remark that Carragher perhaps is wide of the mark with is his need to point out that Klopp has Guardiola’s number. The German manager may have masterminded his side eliminating Man City from the Champions League season but the two managers still both seem equally matched. The pair both have the capacity to mix up their game in order to fool the other and it’s too much of a bold claim to suggest that one has the edge currently.
