Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher believes that Liverpool must start beating Manchester City on a regular basis.

He thinks that the Reds are jealous of the silverware that City has accumulated in the modern era – and says that they must beat Pep Guardiola’s men more often, as well as win trophies much to the dismay of City.

Carragher also reckons that we need to see honours being won at both clubs whilst also remarking on the fact that Liverpool “crave” what Manchester City have on the pitch, with Pep Guardiola’s side craving for what the Reds have off the pitch like their massive fanbase.

“For the competition between them to truly get to the next level Liverpool must beat City regularly and secure the titles at their expense. We need to see trophies at both ends,” he wrote in his Telegraph column.

“Like all the best rivalries, hostility breeds when one side has what the other wants. On the field, City possess everything Liverpool crave.

“I suspect City, and certainly Guardiola, would like a little more of what Liverpool have off it. Liverpool envy the success City are enjoying – specifically the accumulation of Premier League titles.”

OPINION

This fixture has the potential to be one of the greatest in the Premier League, and Carragher is right – Liverpool must prove that they can beat Manchester City on a regular basis. Yes, they defeated them three times last season – but they must now demonstrate to everyone that it was not a fluke, and that they are capable of beating the best when they have to. The Reds certainly have the quality to beat City, but they must seriously improve upon their 1-0 loss to Napoli the other night if they want to stand any chance on Sunday. City will run rings round them if that performance was anything to go by – and that is something that Liverpool must not let happen. As Carragher pointed out, the Reds crave what City have on the pitch – and the only way they will be able to match that, or even overtake them, is by beating them regularly.
