Former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler has disagreed with Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness by saying that this Reds team is not the best it has been since 1990.

Liverpool last won the league in 1990, and Fowler believes that Liverpool must prove themselves by winning a trophy this season if they want to be considered the best.

Fowler adds that this Liverpool side is not playing as well as everybody – including the supporters and boss Jurgen Klopp – wants them to at then moment, despite the fact that they are joint top of the Premier League with Manchester City.

“No (I don’t agree with Souness),” he told Sky Sports News, as quoted by the Express.

“I shouldn’t really argue with Graeme Souness to be honest. But I think if they win stuff, yes. I don’t think you could argue with it then. But until the actual team does win that trophy, or a trophy, then I think the argument is bigger and better.

“Look, I don’t think they’re playing as well as what we as fans and I think Jurgen the manager wants. But what you can’t argue with is the points on the board. It’s a long, long way to go so I don’t think anyone is getting too carried away.

“But he’s certainly got the players fired up and ready for the challenge.”

OPINION

Fowler is absolutely spot on here. Yes, it is easy to see why Souness has said what he has about the current Liverpool team – there is no doubting that they are packed with talent – but it is hard to say they are the best since 1990 if they have not won a trophy yet. Being talented means virtually nothing if a team does not win some silverware, and this is what Liverpool must do if they are to be considered in the same bracket as the team from 1990. Having players like Mo Salah and Virgil Van Dijk is all well and good, but their ability will mean nothing without a trophy to brag about. There has not been a season where they have been more likely to win silverware than this one – so it is an opportunity that they must grab with both hands, even if they do have City challenging them all the way. A chance like this is not certain to happen again, and like Fowler suggested, they must make the most of it to be considered as one of the best Liverpool teams.
