Former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler has said that Mo Salah will not be able to replicate his impressive success from last season but that despite letting Anfield down he will remain a star.

The attacking ace netted an astonishing 31 goals last term, but this campaign has seen him struggle in the final third – and Fowler says that the expectation from the fans that he will be as red hot this season will end in disappointment, but he has still tipped him to contribute to Liverpool’s goal tally nonetheless.

Fowler says that he has been rather impressed by Salah’s “work ethic” this season, saying that he does not back away from a challenge despite only scoring three goals so far.

“I’m not saying he’s having a bad year so far. He’s still a good player, he’s still an excellent player but to replicate what he did last year will be unbelievable,” he told Sky Sports.

“I think he’ll still score goals, I think he’ll still score a lot of goals. What I like about Mo Salah is that his work ethic is brilliant, he doesn’t shy away from anything. What I would be more worried about is if he wasn’t getting chances.

“He will bang the goals in. I’m not sure he’ll hit the heights he did last year but he is still a magnificent player. He will still be a danger throughout the Premier League [season].”

OPINION

Mo Salah certainly having an indifferent time of this season, and Fowler has got it spot on by predicting that he will not replicate his success from last term. That would be an incredibly tough feat to accomplish, and that sort of achievement should not be expected of him in his second season. Critics can moan about his form as much as he likes, but it is not like he is playing badly. That is far from the case, as he has shown signs of brilliance throughout the campaign so far – he has just not been rewarded in terms of goals. There is no doubt that he can score a high volume this year – but pressure should not be heaped on him to perform. The Liverpool team would be seriously weakened without his presence, and it goes without saying that he is still one of their most important players – but like Fowler said, last season’s successes will not be seen this time around.
