Wales manager and Sky Sports guest Ryan Giggs has compared Liverpool loan star Harry Wilson to his former team mate David Beckham after Wilson scored a sumptuous free kick for his country on Tuesday.

The 21-year-old curled a sublime effort past Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Darren Randolph to secure a 1-0 victory for Wales in their UEFA Nations League encounter in Dublin.

And Giggs was delighted with his contribution: “It’s a special talent to be able to do that,” he told Sky Sports. “He does it all the time in the training.

“I have seen David Beckham over the years with his free-kicks and it’s all about practice, practice, practice, and Harry does that as well.”

OPINION

It was certainly another phenomenal set piece effort from Wilson on Tuesday as he completely bamboozled Randolph in the Irish goal. This latest effort follows the youngster’s equally picturesque effort for loan club Derby County against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup last month. Giggs is right, it takes years of practice for a player to consistently be able to produce moments of magic like this and it’s all paying off for Wilson now. Liverpool supporters will be delighted with his performance again last night, and the clamour for him to return to Anfield as a first team regular next season is already starting to build. Giggs’ Beckham comparison is quite a compliment – indeed, it’s surely the highest praise a set piece specialist could ever hope to receive – and Wilson needs to ensure he continues to produce the goods in the coming years for the comparison to prove to be apt.
