Red Star Belgrade star man Marko Marin has been ruled out of the team’s Champions League clash with Liverpool, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The newspaper claims that the 29-year-old attacker is still suffering from the injury that kept him out of the team’s 3-1 victory over Rad Beograd on Saturday.

The former Chelsea man has been in explosive form for the Serbian giants since joining from Olympiacos this summer, netting three goals and making three assists in six games for Vladan Milojevic’s side.

Marin’s absence is a big boost for Liverpool, with the former Germany international showing his quality last time out by scoring Red Star’s only goal in their 6-1 loss to Paris Saint-Germain.

OPINION

This is a big plus for Liverpool. Make no mistake, the Reds should be capable of beating Red Star whether they are full strength or not, but Marin’s absence is still good news for Jurgen Klopp’s side. There won’t be many names in the Red Star squad that English fans will recognise, but Marin is certainly one of them. He had an ignominious time at Chelsea but prior to that he had looked terrific in Germany with Borussia Monchengladbach and Werder Bremen. He remains a high level talent and Liverpool would rather not be facing him than facing him. However, the Reds won’t be worried about what Red Star are doing and will only be thinking about what they can do. Still, whenever your opponent’s best player is ruled out it is a big bonus. This will only increase the expectation that Klopp’s team are in line for a big win at Anfield on Wednesday, and we’ll have to wait and see now to find out if they can deliver.
