Joe Gomez and Jordan Henderson left England training early on Tuesday as manager Gareth Southgate looks to manage their workload after their draw with Manchester City on Sunday, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper report that the Liverpool duo were among six players given permission to sit out a portion of the session by the England management team over concerns of burnout.

The Mail claim that John Stones and Kyle Walker were also withdrawn for the same reason, while Harry Kane and Jadon Sancho were the other two players who sat out.

OPINION

This merely looks like a precaution from Southgate and the England team as they look to avoid burnout for some of their top stars. Being involved in a such a high intensity game just two days before the start of camp with England will obviously take its toll, and Henderson and Gomez deserve some extra rest. The same goes for Stones and Walker, who both completed 90 minutes in the 0-0 draw. Southgate’s reasoning for sitting out Sancho is clear as well, with the youngster starting back-to-back games for Borussia Dortmund. At just 18 years old, it is important that Sancho is protected from burnout and injury as much as possible as England look to aid his development into a world-class player. The only worry here would look to be about Tottenham star Kane, who has been thought to be suffering from fatigue and exhaustion over the past few weeks.
