Fulham and Fenerbahce are interested in signing Liverpool centre-back Joel Matip in the January transfer window, according to A Spor

The Turkish outlet report that the Cottagers are keen on bringing in the Cameroon international to bolster their defensive options, while Super Lig side Fenerbahce are also in the hunt.

A Sport report that Fenerbahce director of football Damian Comolli, who used to work for Liverpool, is hoping to win the 27-year-old over and convince him of a move to Turkey.

OPINION

It makes sense that Fulham want to sign Matip in the January window, with the Cottagers seriously struggling at the back so far this season. However, it would seem premature for new boss Claudio Ranieri to have already identified targets on the day of his appointment. Matip was potentially a target for Slavisa Jokanovic before his sacking, and may yet be a target for Ranieri, but as of now this story lacks a bit of credibility. On the Fenerbahce front it may well be more truthful however, with the Super Lig giants seriously struggling so far this season. They are currently languishing in 13th and will need some reinforcements in January to turn their season around, with Matip a good option to bolster their defence. Whether Liverpool would sell is another matter entirely, with Matip an important squad player for Jurgen Klopp, especially in the case of injuries in the coming weeks.
