OPINION

The clash between Liverpool and Manchester City on January 3 will no doubt go down as one of the defining matches of the season in terms of the Premier League title race.

Both clubs have been evenly matched in terms of their unbeaten league records this season, so it is safe to say that this fixture will go a long way in deciding who takes home the title.

However, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp will no doubt be rejoicing after hearing that City defender Benjamin Mendy has now been ruled out due to having surgery on his knee, as confirmed by the player himself via his personal Twitter account.

However, Ben Dinnery – who is an injury data analyst for the likes of ESPN FC – revealed via his Twitter account that Mendy could be out for eight weeks at the most.

Seeming as the Reds’ trip to the Etihad is in seven weeks’ time, the fact that City’s first choice left-back could be sidelined for the game will no doubt be a major boost for Klopp and his team.

City’s back four have been pretty solid this season, and this has only been reinforced with the presence of Mendy – but now that he is out, Liverpool could have a field day on the left flank.

This is something which they must use to their advantage in their visit, as exploiting this potential weakness could prove dividends for them.

Liverpool recognise the importance of winning this match, and the ace’s injury could be the difference between them and the title.

The Reds need all of the extra help they can get this season – and Mendy’s absence has a gone a long way to provide that.

If Liverpool do not manage to exploit this potential pitfall, then that will prove that they are just not ready for silverware this season.

Over to you, Jurgen.
