Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has ruled out the possibility of signing players in the January transfer window unless something “crazy” happens that forces him to do so.

He says that he does not expect anything bad to happen that would make him have to acquire new players, and the fact that he has each position covered sufficiently means that January will be relatively quiet for him in terms of incomings.

Klopp also ruled out Liverpool getting a new forward – and the report states that the upcoming window will be last one where they will be able to sell Lazar Markovic before his contract ends next summer.

“If crazy things happen then maybe we have to think new, but I don’t expect that. At the moment it doesn’t look like we will be too busy, but it all depends on injuries and things like that,” he said, as quoted by ESPN FC.

“In the moment we have each position twice, three times and sometimes four times covered. I don’t think there is any reason to try to do something really big like bring in another striker.

“We have all that we need. Our job now is to use the quality that we have and to work with it because one player doesn’t change it.”

OPINION

It is not surprising that Klopp has issued this stance on Liverpool’s upcoming transfer activity in the next window. Why would they need to get any one else in if they are so adequately covered? Like Klopp said, each position is covered three or four times, and that is more than enough to have good depth within the squad. The report states that his aim to achieve good depth within the side was achieved in the summer when he signed Alisson, Xherdan Shaqiri, Naby Keita and Fabinho – so adding more players to that list would be absolutely pointless. He pointed out that the only instance where he would feel it is necessary to sign players is if something “crazy” happens – in other words, if he gets injuries to a large volume of players. This is highly unlikely to happen, so we will see a very quiet transfer window for the Reds in January.
