A section of Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to savage midfielder James Milner following the 2-0 defeat to Red Star Belgrade on Tuesday.

The home side dominated in the first half of this Champions League Group C encounter thanks to a brace from striker Pavkov, a result which means the Reds now drop to second in the group behind Napoli.

Many Liverpool fans have taken to the social media site in order to vent their frustration over the display of one of their first teamers, with some comments including “absolute invisible player” and “non existent”.

COMMENTARY

It is actually quite a shock to see the Liverpool fans slam Milner in the way that they have done here. He is usually very consistent, and there is often not a bad word said against him following his performances in a red shirt. What is more surprising is that this has come after he netted in the 1-1 draw with Arsenal on Saturday – a game that Liverpool almost won. However, this should take away from the fact that he was not at his best on Tuesday. Whether this is down to tiredness remains to be seen, but Milner certainly did not look himself in the middle of the park, and he definitely did not take charge like he usually does. Fingers crossed that this is just a blip for the Anfield fan favourite, as it is a shame not to see him at his best – but unfortunately, it is hard not to agree with the verdict of the Liverpool supporters here.
