Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness has savaged Liverpool’s attack following their 2-1 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Wednesday.

He was puzzled why players with such talent and technical ability were only able to muster up one shot on target between them in the entirety of the match – something he says should be “impossible”, but was “achieved” by the Reds’ attack.

Souness explained how Liverpool will be “punished” if they do not perform at the highest level against teams like PSG, something which is demonstrated through the fact that they have only recorded five shots on target in three away matches.

“It is a worry. You play 90 minutes with all that firepower on the pitch and they manage one shot on target. You’d think that would be nigh on impossible for the players Liverpool have got. But they achieved it tonight,” he told Virgin Media Sport, as quoted by the Metro.

“You’d think that would be nigh on impossible for the players Liverpool have got. But they achieved it tonight. Five shots on target in three away games. You don’t win European Cups unless you’re scoring goals!

“And if you make a mistake you’ll be punished at the highest level.”

OPINION

It is not a shock that Souness has delivered this type of verdict on Liverpool’s attack against PSG – where were they? When you have the likes of Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino, you expect a tirade of attack time and time again, but for some reason, this was nowhere to be seen. Whether this is down to PSG outplaying them or them not putting in the maximum effort, it is actually rather worrying. Their future in the Champions League is now being seriously compromised and they look a shadow of the team that got to the final last year with their excellent brand of creative football. That has just disappeared – but they cannot falter when they are on the road as it is just going to wreck their hopes of winning anything. It is a shame to see Liverpool perform like this as the fans know they are much better than they are showing – after all, they managed to beat PSG at Anfield – so fingers crossed that they can get the result that they want against Napoli in their final group clash.
