Jamie Carragher raved about Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk during the 2-0 win over Wolves on Friday night.

The Reds legend was blown away by how easy the 27-year-old was able to stop the threat of Wolves attacker Raul Jimenez and highlighted how he also stopped Adama Traore being a threat in the first 45 minutes of the match.

Carragher went on to share that in his opinion Van Dijk had already ‘paid’ the fee the Reds spent to sign him from Southampton in January even though he was yet to lift silverware at Anfield.

“Absolutely brilliant no centre-back is usually in that position as they’re looking out wide to cover but he dealt with the threat so well in the first half against Traore and he was clever, he realised he couldn’t knock Traore out the way nor did he have more pace than him so he showed him to one side and made it difficult to shoot,” said Carragher while commentating on Liverpool’s win v Wolves (Sky Sports Premier League, Friday December 21st, 21:32).

“Then he is against Jimenez he knows he doesn’t have his strength or the pace so that’s when he comes across and just knocks him out the way.

“I think it has been paid (his fee) I understand what you mean (need to win trophies) but at the end of his time you want trophies but if someone said to Jurgen Klopp here is another £75million for Van Dijk, he’d pay it.”

OPINION

The Reds made everyone jaws drop when they spent £75million (Source: BBC Sport)  to bring Van Dijk to Anfield and it has turned out to be an amazing move. The centre-back has shone bright ever since he joined from the Saints and has been key in making the Reds look like their capable of adding to their trophies cabinet in the near future. While Manchester City will push the Reds all the way for the Premier League title this season, with Jurgen Klopp’s side sitting top at Christmas because of their win over Wolves, supporters will be dreaming that their side is going to be league champions this season. With that said, Reds fans know that their club are in that position due to the likes of Van Dijk and were no doubt as thrilled as Carragher with the defender’s display against Wolves. Hopefully the centre-back is able to keep excelling as the season goes on and if he does this, then the Reds could soon be lifting silverware.
