Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has predicted that Liverpool will secure a comfortable win at Burnley in the Premier League on Wednesday.

The Reds travel to Turf Moor high on confidence after a last-gasp win in the Merseyside derby against Everton on Sunday, with Divock Origi netting a 96th-minute winner following a mistake from Toffees goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

Merson has now predicted a 2-0 win for Jurgen Klopp’s side on Wednesday, and surprisingly suggested that we may look back on Pickford’s mistake as a potential title-winning moment for the Reds should they beat out Manchester City in May.

In his predictions for Sky Sports, Merson said: “It could have gone either way for Liverpool against Everton but they found a way to win. In the end it was a massive football result for Jurgen Klopp and his side. They are still behind City at the moment but who knows if we’ll look back at that result in six months time and say Pickford won Liverpool the league.

“I can’t see anything but a Liverpool win here. It’s a case of damage limitation for Burnley.”

OPINION

It would take a brave man to bet against Liverpool going to Turf Moor and coming away with anything less than three points on Wednesday. This clash sees one of the division’s most in-form sides facing an opponent who simply cannot buy a win at the moment, and it would be a huge surprise if the encounter did not pan out as expected. Liverpool will be even more confident and jubilant following their win over Everton on Sunday, and they will undoubtedly be raring to go on Wednesday. Burnley on the other hand will be questioning themselves after a dismal start to the season which has seen them secure just two wins and nine points so far. Sean Dyche’s men look to be paying the price for their ultimately unsuccessful Europa League qualifying campaign in the summer which extended their season by a month or so. Few would have picked them as relegation candidates after their brilliant campaign last time round, but they are certainly in the mix for the drop now amid this horrific run of form.
