Danny Murphy took a cheeky dig at Manchester United as he claimed it was nice for Liverpool to have an easy game following their Champions League clash on Tuesday.

The Reds are set to face Man United at Anfield on Sunday but first have to overcome Italian giants Napoli in the Champions League on Tuesday evening.

“Well it’s good to have an easy game after a tough night in the Champions League,” said Murphy on talkSPORT (Monday December 10, 12:54).

Murphy then paused as Bob Mills and Jim White laughed at his remark before sharing that he predicted the Reds’ to either secure a draw or a win when they face Jose Mourinho’s side.

“They’ll be favourites now, I think United will have to play very well to get anything,” Murphy continued.

“Though the thing about United is, that their poorer performances have generally been against poorer opposition, they went to Juve, they got a result at Chelsea, they’re not players who are going to freeze in the big moments as in the big picture they have played so many big games.

“A lot of United problems have come against weaker opposition this season, and no (when asked whether the Reds will lose their unbeaten record on Sunday), my heart says no and my heart says no.

“United might dig out a draw but I can’t see them being able to, if they get a win then I’ll hold my hands up, but I can’t see it with Liverpool’s firepower.”

OPINION

Liverpool fans may love Murphy’s remarks but there probably won’t be any Man United supporters who will appreciate them. However Manchester United fans no doubt expect Murphy, who played 170 times for Liverpool, to take any opportunity he can to have a dig. Yet while it obviously won’t be easy game for Jurgen Klopp’s side, the rest of Murphy’s prediction is understandable. The Reds are yet to suffer a defeat in the Premier League this season and given that Man United have struggled to live up to expectations so far, then you wouldn’t back them to be the team to inflict Liverpool’s first defeat. Yet football is a strange game and stranger things have happened, so Klopp has to make sure his side are still at their best when they take on Man United. This may be easier said than done depending on Tuesday’s result against Napoli as his team will be buzzing if they successfully defeat the Serie A side to get rid of any doubts that they are set for an early exit from the Champions League.
