Sky Sports pundit Alan Smith raved about Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum while commentating on the Reds’ 4-0 win over Bournemouth on Saturday.

The 56-year-old shared that he thought the Dutch international was an unsung hero at Anfield as he didn’t believe the player got as much attention as his performances warranted.

Smith then proceeded to highlight how consistent Wijnaldum had become while regularly featuring for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

“He’s (Wijnaldum) is an unsung hero I think, he doesn’t get as much attention as his performances might,” said Smith while commentating on Liverpool against Bournemouth for Sky Sports Premier League (Saturday December 8, 13:54).

“He’s so consistent these days.”

OPINION

Wijnaldum has featured 20 times for the Reds this season and appears to be a vital cog in the Reds’ current team. While the 28-year-old’s form has dipped slightly as of late, he did start his 2018/19 campaign in spectacular fashion. There would have been some who would have questioned whether the midfielder had a bright future at Anfield in the summer as Klopp welcomed a couple of new midfielders but Wijnaldum has raised his game in order to keep his first-team status secure. Hopefully the 28-year-old midfielder is able to keep excelling for the Reds this season but perhaps gets the praise he deserves as well. If the Reds, who currently sit top of the league, end up lifting silverware this season and Wijnaldum continues to be a regular fixture of the team, then that will mostly likely see him get showered with the praise that Smith clearly believes he deserves.
