Chris Sutton instantly reacted to Liverpool defeating Everton 1-0 on Sunday to share that Virgil Van Dijk’s performance in the game shows why he is the best defender in the world.

The BT Sport pundit heaped praise on the 27-year-old centre-back in a brief post on his verified personal Twitter account to make the claim that the player was the best defender in the world.

“That’s why Van Dijk is the best defender in the world,” remarked the pundit.

Sutton previously gained a lot of attention for remarks on Van Dijk earlier in the season as he claimed the Reds player was the third best in the world, regardless of position in an article for the the BBC.

OPINION

Van Dijk was his usual self at the back and submitted a solid display that saw the Toffees frustrated throughout the game. The centre-back has been in tremendous form this season in his 19 outings and you feel that he will be a key factor in whether the Reds win trophies by the time the current campaign ends. Van Dijk can easily make a claim for being the best defender in the Premier League and is definitely in the running to be dubbed the best in the world. However while he was good against the Toffees, it wasn’t his best performance of the season. This is a testament to the level of display Van Dijk is capable of more than anything, but it just seem odd of Sutton to use Sunday’s game as his proof regarding his belief for the centre-back. Yet then again by the end of the season, perhaps the outspoken BT Sport pundit won’t be asked to back up his praise for Van Dijk as everyone will simply accept it.
