OPINION

Liverpool were aiming to bounce back from their disappointing defeat to Paris Saint-Germain by getting one over their local rivals Everton on Sunday.

The Reds hosted the Toffees at Anfield in the first Merseyside Derby of the season and just got about the win they so desired.

Jurgen Klopp’s side, despite having chances, went into the half time break with their locals rivals with the score level at 0-0.

The scoreline didn’t look like changing for another 45 minutes of action with the Reds’ best chance falling to Divock Origi near the end of the game, which he missed.

However out of nowhere Origi took advantage of the Toffees goalkeeper Jordan Pickford making a mistake at the death to make it 1-0 to his side.

Live 4 Liverpool have rated every single Liverpool player for their performances against Everton, with one player scoring a 3/10 after having a personal woeful day at the office.

Goalkeeper and defence

Alisson Becker –  8 – Started a promising attack in early minutes by getting the ball quickly out to Mohamed Salah. Great save to stop the Reds falling behind after Andre Gomes had a cracking opportunity to score. Made another vital save to deny Theo Walcott putting the Toffees ahead.

Trent Alexander-Arnold – 8 – Great play bursting forward to create an opportunity for the Reds in opening 10 minutes. Made an excellent tackle after Fabinho and Virgil van Dijk didn’t communicate about who was going for a header. Wasted a poor free-kick before the half-time whistle. However that was one blip in a great display.

Joe Gomez –  7.5 – Was comfortable in possession in the first half and dealt with what he had to.Thankfully sprung into action to clear the ball off the lines when  Gomes went agonisingly close for the Toffees.

Virgil van Dijk – 8 – Gave the ball carelessly away in 13th minute but quickly made up him with the rest of his first half play. The centre-back was solid and reliable for the rest of the match.

Andy Robertson – 7  – Kept charging down the flank in the first half, which was promising even if didn’t lead to a goal. Great cross midway into the second half, which someone should have turned home.

Midfield

Georginio Wijnaldum –  7 – Quietly got on with his job of trying to dictate the tempo in midfield. Was quickly denied a clear chance on goal but was good to see him actually get in a shooting position in the second half.

Fabinho – 8 – Lovely chip pass to Salah in the first-half. Kept putting pressure on his opponents to act quickly. Vital cog in midfield and the ace who has been sparingly-used this season, shone bright in his 10th outing for the club.

Xherdan Shaqiri –  6 – Saw a lot of the ball in the first-half without doing too much damage. Should have scored after picking up the ball but Jordan Pickford made a decent save to deny him. Disappeared as soon as the second half begun.

Attack

Mohamed Salah –  7 – Made a few driving runs in the early stages, but didn’t amount to anything. Played Shaqiri beautifully through on goal. Went very close to score as soon as second half begun. He huffed and he puffed but couldn’t score, his effort can’t be criticised.

Sadio Mane – 7  – Chipped the ball into Salah beautifully but it just didn’t fall kindly for the Egyptian in the 11th minute. Wasted an opportunity to score after making a great run, but he blazed his effort over the crossbar. Kept pushing forward in first half, was full of beans. Wasted another opportunity that Roberto Firmino gifted him moments into the second half.

Roberto Firmino –  3   – Gave the ball sloppily away to Bernard. Went close to scoring in opening 20 minutes but dragged his shot just wide. Had a poor first half but played Mane beautifully through on goal in the early stages of the second half. However that moment of brilliance was about it for Firmino. The first-team regular’s form is starting to be a worry.

Substitutes

Shaqiri off, Naby Keita on (71) –  5 – Didn’t force the issue upon coming on, oddly looked to be a more defensive change.

Salah off, Daniel Strurridge on (75) – 5 – No golden opportunities fell his way in fairness, could have done with coming on sooner.

Firmino off, Divock Origi on (84)- N/A – Missed a sitter but then snatched the winner. What a day for him.
