OPINION
You can understand why the Liverpool supporters were so thrilled with Virgil van Dijk’s actions at half time in his team’s 5-1 win over Arsenal on Saturday. The Reds absolutely battered Unai Emery’s side and Van Dijk was key to that once again at the heart of the defence, but it was his actions near the tunnel at half time that really impressed the club’s fans. The Dutchman saw that Arsenal defender Sokratis was giving Mohamed Salah a bit of stick, probably for going down rather easily for his first half penalty, and so Van Dijk came over to give the Greek international a taste of his own medicine. He shoved the Gunners star away from Salah and proceeded to chase him down the tunnel in order to protect his star player. It was a real captain’s moment from Van Dijk as he identified a problem and went and sorted it. It might not always be the best idea to get in a confrontation with the opposition, but there’s no doubt that the Liverpool fans appreciated this incident.

Virgil Van Dijk is putting Sokratis in his place. Proper big brother, bodyguard, protector type. This guy is a general. #LFC
