Liverpool starlet Bobby Adekanye is set to run down his contract and leave the club at the end of the season, according to the Liverpool Echo

The regional newspaper report that the 19-year-old has rejected the offer of a new deal on Merseyside, with several European clubs interested in signing him.

The Echo claim that an exit this month has been discussed, but Adekanye will now stay put at Melwood until the summer when he may return to the Netherlands in search of first-team football.

Having played a big part in his development, Liverpool should be in line for a compensation fee for Adekanye.

OPINION

It had looked for all the money in the world that Adekanye was set to complete a switch to Lazio this month after the Serie A club launched a bid to sign him. However, after things going quiet since then, it looks like the 19-year-old has instead opted to remain at Liverpool before making a switch in the summer. The young forward is currently nursing a pretty serious injury, and will continue his rehabilitation with Liverpool before likely leaving the club at the end of the season. Obviously such a situation is not ideal for the Reds, but there is nothing they can do about it. There were high hopes for the Netherlands youth international when he joined from Barcelona, and while Adekanye did show glimpses of his talent, he is clearly a long way from first-team football at Anfield. Where he will end up next is anyone’s guess, but a return to the Netherlands is certainly a good option if he wants to start playing senior football immediately.
