Former Liverpool striker Peter Crouch has said that he believes Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has the makings of Jurgen Klopp’s eventual successor at Anfield.

The Reds legend has exceeded expectations in guiding the Ibrox outfit to joint top of the Scottish Premiership table at the half way point of the season, as well as enjoying a decent run in the Europa League.

Crouch has been seriously impressed and has given his former team mate his backing: “Should things continue to go well — and I don’t see why they won’t — in the long-term, I could envisage Steven ending up back at Liverpool,” he wrote in his Daily Mail column.

“If he can make a club as big as Rangers successful, he would be an ideal candidate to succeed Jurgen Klopp,” he finished.

OPINION

It was undoubtedly a risky move for Gerrard to pick Rangers as his first managerial post, but he has done tremendously well north of the border. Yes he has spent a lot of money in relative terms – far more than anyone else (bar Celtic) in the Scottish Premiership – but he’s made it count. His signings have been good and he’s given everyone on the blue half of Glasgow a lift. You simply have to look at where the club were last season compared to where they are now to see what a good job he’s done so far. Having said that, it’s too early for him to be bandied about as Klopp’s successor. The German is doing a wonderful job himself and doesn’t look set to leave the club for a long time to come. Perhaps Gerrard will be the man to replace him, but perhaps not. Managing Rangers, with all due respect, is not the same as managing Liverpool, and the Reds would be wise to see if Gerrard can cut it in England before they hand him the reins at Anfield.
