Liverpool are closing in on the signing of Lyon academy player Billy Koumetio, according to the Chief Editor of RMC Sport, Mouhamed Bouhafsi.

In a post made to his personal Twitter on Wednesday afternoon, the respected journalist suggested that a deal was close to being completed for a player he describes as a ‘hope for French football’.

The 16-year-old defender is understood to be in England currently after the Ligue 1 side sanctioned the deal, according to Bouhafsi.

Good move for Liverpool?

Koumetio is so young that it’s hard to say for certain, but he is certainly highly thought of and he could be a big star for the future. It’s good to see Liverpool begin to flex their status a little bit and make moves like this for some of the best young talent on the continent. Since Klopp came in there has been a much greater emphasis on youth, and this season in particular that’s starting to come to fruition. Not every single one of these gambles is going to pay off, but if you can find just a handful of useful prodigies then you can save yourself millions further down the line.

Likely to happen?

This feels like a case of crossing the Ts and dotting the Is. The teenager is reportedly in England, his current club seem happy to let him go through with the move, and Liverpool are keen. It would be a huge surprise if it didn’t happen at this stage.
