Liverpool are in the hunt for Brescia midfielder Sandro Tonali after contacting the club’s owner Massimo Cellino about a switch.

The Reds have made contact with Brescia – who currently play in the second tier of Italian football in Serie B – over the availability of their 18-year-old starlet, with AS Roma also asking about the midfielder.

Tonali was called up to the Italy national team in November by Roberto Mancini, and has been a regular in the Brescia first team this season with 18 appearances.

“Yes, Rome asked me Tonali. With Baldissoni we talked about it several times. But because I want to keep the boy as possible. It’s ready? I do not know, he’s 18 years old … But a little while ago, Liverpool also contacted me,” Cellino told Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport.

OPINION

Tonali is clearly quite the talent if he has already been called up to the Italy national team at the age of 18 – and the fact that he has been noticed despite playing in Serie B is quite the achievement. This obviously indicates that he is a star for the future, so it is no surprise that Liverpool and Roma have contacted Brescia about whether he is available. However, despite the fact that he undoubtedly has the potential to do well, it remains to be seen just where he would fit into the first team. The Reds have enough midfielders as it as and competition is rife for a place in the starting XI, so signing him this month would essentially be pointless. That being said though, Jurgen Klopp is likely to make him train with the youth side if he did make the switch until he has proved he is ready to be unleashed in the first team.
