Liverpool are leading the chase for South American defender Nicolas Acevedo, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper reports on its website that the Reds are leading the hunt for the 19-year-old along with the likes of rivals Manchester United, with both clubs sending scouts to watch the youngster in action in the under-20 Championships with Uruguay.

The report adds that other clubs in Europe are interested in the services of the player – who features for his team in Montevideo – as well as Arsenal, Chelsea and Norwich City.

OPINION

Acevedo must be quite the talent if he has all of these clubs flocking to see him in action -especially if it is the likes of the Premier League top four. They would not be scouting him for no reason, as they clearly think he has potential if they are so eager to watch him in action. Obviously Acevedo has not been seen in action very much before this point, so it is hard to judge his ability and whether he would be good for a team like Liverpool. It remains to be seen why the Reds are chasing a relatively unknown player like Acevedo, as it is a very bold risk to take. Yes, they are no doubt interested in him in the hope of developing him into a top-quality player, but what would the fans think? With Serie A side Udinese also in the running, the Reds face numerous obstacles in getting the youngster to join forces with them.
