German heavyweights Schalke have entered the race for in-demand Liverpool attacker Dominic Solanke, according to the Evening Standard.

The newspaper claims that Domenico Tedesco’s side are interested in securing the 21-year-old on loan until the end of the season.

Crystal Palace were said to be close to completing the temporary signing of the Englishman, but Schlake’s late interest has the potential to change things.

The German side’s sporting director Christian Heidel worked with Reds boss Jurgen Klopp at Mainz, a relationship that could come into play here.

OPINION

Well this is interesting, isn’t it? Solanke seemed, to all intents and purposes, a Palace player, but he must now be reconsidering his options with the chance to play Champions League football on the table with Schalke. German football has become a popular destination with young English players in recent years, and we’ve seen the likes of Jadon Sancho, Reiss Nelson and Reece Oxford flourish over there in recent times. It’s clear that this theme of English players going to Germany, either permanently on loan, looks set to be a fixture for some time to come. Solanke may well be the next player to do so. It could be a good move for him, too. He would be playing in a better team than he would at Palace, but he wouldn’t have the same level of competition that is weighing him down at Liverpool. It seems like a better move for him at this moment in time but, honestly, any temporary switch away from Anfield is a good idea for him at this stage.
