Souness back Liverpool for title win

|

Graeme Souness has backed Liverpool to win the Premier League because of the pragmatism Jurgen Klopp has instilled in his side.

The Reds are currently four points clear at the top of the table, having already played defending champions Manchester City twice.

Speaking to the club’s official website, former player and manager Souness said: “We’re in a great position. Just keep your nerve and treat each game as the next one is the most important one, don’t look too far ahead.

“If you can, keep that four-point advantage and it’s first to blink really, in the long-term.

“As well as being a great watch, Liverpool are a pretty pragmatic team as well; they are a pretty strong outfit when they’re not dominant, they’re still capable of winning games. That makes them a dangerous team. It makes you league champions when you can win games without being at your best.

“I’ve got a sneaky feeling Liverpool will win it this year because of the slightly pragmatic way they can play at times.”

OPINION

Souness is right, you win titles by winning matches when you are not at your best, but Liverpool aren’t the only team in the league capable of a little bit of pragmatism. The Reds are in a commanding position, and they have looked very inch champions elect this season, but you can never underestimate a Pep Guardiola side, and especially one as dominant as his was last season. Expect City to be relentless form here on in, and Liverpool to be constantly looking over their shoulder. The key to this season will be how well the Reds deal with their newfound favourite status, but Souness is correct in his appraisal of their grit. Once upon a time Liverpool would have crumbled in the position they find themselves in now, but now, with Klopp’s backing and a bit of belief, they actually look as if they can go the distance. It won’t easy, but it’s doable.
