Former Liverpool great John Aldridge has claimed that Mohamed Salah’s performance against Manchester United was his worst in a Reds shirt.

The Egyptian was one of several Liverpool players who failed to reach the heights they’ve scaled this season at Old Trafford, and Aldridge was in agreement with the common consensus of his display.

“It was probably Mohamed Salah’s worst performance in a Liverpool shirt – but he is allowed that, he’s only human,” he wrote in his Liverpool Echo column.

“I [have] seen a lot of reporters giving him three and four out of 10 in their ratings and it was that kind of day for Salah. He had a decent chance with a free-kick that he sent way over the bar and I don’t know why it didn’t click for him. It was a bad day for him to have an off-day – at Manchester United away – because everyone picks up on it straight away.”

OPINION

There’s no disagreeing with Aldridge here, really. Salah was absolutely woeful on Sunday. For whatever reason he just couldn’t seem to find his groove and that was typical of the majority of the Liverpool players at Old Trafford. The whole team weren’t at their best, it wasn’t just Salah. But he is their attacking talisman and so the spotlight will inevitably shine brightest on him when he fails to reach top form. He is an unbelievable player, but there’s no question that he’s disappointed against the top teams this season, and that continued on Sunday. The United defence were far too comfortable and you just don’t expect that from a backline facing players like Salah and Sadio Mane. He remains a tremendous player but he needs to step it up against the best sides, that much is clear. It arguably was his worst performance on Sunday, but it’s all about bouncing back and he has a chance to do that against Watford on Wednesday.
