“That’s never a good sign, I would say, but we will try everything to make Dejan available for Munich. It will be a tight race.

“For him, it makes sense in the moment to be in another place to do what he has to do. It wouldn’t have helped if he was here, so we will try everything – that’s clear.”

Lovren’s injury probably couldn’t have come at a word time for Liverpool, who have missed the Croatian in amongst the rest of their defensive absentees. The 29-year-old would no doubt have been a shoe in for the Reds’ backline in the absence of Joe Gomez, and missing their most senior cover really damaged the solidity of their defensive efforts. The hope will be that Lovren is fit in time to face Bayern next week in what promises to be a thrilling clash. The fact that he hasn’t travelled with the squad to Marbella could be read either way really. On the one hand, Klopp may have exercised caution and told the big man to prioritise gym work in preparation for his return, but on the other, he may be so far off the pace that the whole thing would have been pointless. Supporters and management will hope it’s the former, although Klopp’s words sound less than optimistic.
