Liverpool fans tear into Milner v Watford

OPINION

There are few players as hard working or committed as James Milner, and the Kop love him for it. The Liverpool man is a fierce competitor and as honest as the day is long, but he struggled against Manchester United on Sunday, and looked as if he had brought that disappointing form with him into Wednesday night’s clash with Watford. For the majority of the first half, Milner looked a little off the pace compared to his usual high energy self, and appeared to be lacking a certain amount of cutting edge in the final third. That’s not to say that he didn’t put in a shift like he alway does, but he sets his own standards so high that when he dips below them it really is quite noticeable. At least, however, he looked than he did in Sunday’s dire outing at right-back against Manchester United, and for all of his flaws in the first half against the Hornets, you would think that Jurgen Klopp must still have seen enough to convince him that, ultimately, Milner is more effective in the centre of the park. It’s a cliche, but they say form is temporary and class is permanent. Hopefully Milner’s current spell is very fleeting indeed.
