Liverpool legend – and current Rangers manager – Steven Gerrard sent his old team a Premier League title message on Saturday.

The 38-year-old was at Anfield for a charity match against an AC Milan legends side and he scored a late winner for the Reds. After the game he issued Jurgen Klopp’s charges a title rallying cry.

“I’ve got a day job now but I still keep one eye on Anfield,” he said, as transcribed the Liverpool Echo.

“I just hope the lads can go and get us over the line because I’ll be the happiest man in the world.”

OPINION

It’s nice to hear that Gerrard still keeps track of what’s going on at Anfield. He’s obviously not just a former player, but a born and bred diehard Liverpool fan. He adores the team and he served them with distinction for many, many years. You can only imagine how much it would mean for him to see his boyhood club return to title-winning form after almost 30 years. His delight would only increase as a result of him being part of the Reds team that came so close to glory under Brendan Rodgers. He wasn’t responsible for their failure to get over the line, but his slip against Chelsea is the indelible image from that season’s title race. It would clearly mean the world to the former England international, then, were Klopp’s team to pip Manchester City to the post this term. Let’s all keep our fingers crossed that that is what ends up happening as Gerrard’s reaction if the Reds fulfil their PL title ambitions will be priceless.
