Doncaster Rovers manager Grant McCann has confirmed that Liverpool youngster Herbie Kane will remain with the club for treatment after the midfielder’s recent injury.

The 20-year-old suffered a groin injury in training last week that is expected to keep him out for around six weeks, but McCann has stated that he will not be returning to Merseyside for more than just an assessment as he hopes to be missing the Reds loanee for just a month.

“Liverpool trust us with this treatment,” he told the Doncaster Free Press. “We spoke to Liverpool and asked them did they want him back but they’re quite pleased with what John has said to them.

“He’ll go back on Tuesday and they will assess him but he’ll be back in with us on Thursday. We’re hoping it’s not going to be six weeks and be more like four.”

OPINION

This is probably a good thing for Kane. The youngster doesn’t need his recovery interrupted by a spell back at Liverpool only to return to Doncaster should they make the play offs – it would simply confuse things. Kane needs stability if he is to recover in the four week time frame McCann has given him, rather than the six week diagnosis he was initially given. So, aside from a small sojourn to Liverpool for an assessment, it appears that he will be recovering at the Keepmoat Stadium. That’s for the best, as it gives him the best chance of recovering as quickly as possible. While it’s likely that he might miss the rest of the regular season, he still has a good chance of featuring in the play offs if McCann’s team get there. That is a massive incentive for the young midfielder to try and recover as soon as he can. Obviously you don’t want him to rush his recovery and worsen the injury, but he’s been such an important player for Doncaster that they will be desperate for him to be back soon.
