Liverpool centre-back Virgil Van Dijk has been many peoples’ favourite for PFA Player of the Season this year for quite a while.

Reds supporters and many pundits have not been able to get enough of him in this campaign, and there has not been a week that has gone by where he has not been praised for his performances. To be honest, a defender has not been hyped up so much in the Premier League for a very long time.

Sam Allardyce has claimed on talkSPORT’s ‘Sports Breakfast‘ that it is Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero who should win the award, purely based on the fact that he has not won it yet and that he deserves after the way he has played in the last few years.

There is absolutely no denying that Aguero is a world class forward. He has netted an impressive tally of 28 goals in all competitions this season, figure that many would struggle to achieve. However, despite the goal count, he has not really stood out with his performances like Van Dijk has.

Many Liverpool fans are going to be left scratching their heads with Allardyce’s claim here. If anything, the award is based on how well a player has performed in the 2018/2019 season – not in the last few seasons like Allardyce has based his claim on.

We all know that Aguero is capable of 20 goals or more a season – that is a given. On the other hand, Van Dijk has come into the Liverpool team and transformed the defence completely. There is hardly an attacker in the land who does not fear coming up against him.

Either way, lots of Liverpool fans are going to be baffled that Allardyce has gone for Aguero over the 27-year-old Reds star here.
