Liverpool have been handed a significant boost in their pursuit of a first league title in 29 years after Egypt’s decision not to call Mohamed Salah up for their next squad, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper claims that the 26-year-old won’t be selected by his country for international duty this month, with manager Javier Aguirre allowing him to rest instead.

Egypt face a double header against Niger and Nigeria at the back end of March, with the total journey Salah would have taken being over 9000 miles.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp will be delighted that one of his most valuable players has been handed some unexpected rest time.

OPINION

There’s no doubt that this is tremendous news for Liverpool. Salah hasn’t looked like himself recently and so it would be a big boost for him personally to have a little extra time to rest and recover. He has played a lot of football over the past couple of seasons and at some point that’s going to take a toll on his body. Perhaps that’s what’s happening at the moment, because he’s clearly not in the irrepressible form that he usually is for the Reds. In that case, 10 days or so off could be exactly what he needs. Hopefully he will come back after the international break and take the Premier League by storm once again. He likely would have been called up if these weren’t two meaningless games. The Niger clash is an African Cup of Nations qualifying dead rubber, while the Nigeria match is only a friendly. Egypt don’t really need him for those games and so they’re doing both Liverpool and the player a favour. It could end up being a crucial moment in this year’s title race, though.
