Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet is unlikely to be sold this summer despite having played just two games for the Reds over the entire season, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper claim that unless Jurgen Klopp chooses to snap up a new shot stopper in the transfer window the experienced Belgian international is set to remain as Alisson’s understudy, a role which has seen him feature once in the FA Cup and once in the League Cup, with a place on the substitute’s bench his regular spot.

Having spoken to TV Limburg about his desire to be playing, saying “I’d like to play… I don’t know if an exit is possible,” it seems as though the 31-year-old is set to be continually frustrated by his place at Anfield.

Opinion

Mignolet saw his stock drop like a lead balloon with a series of unconvincing performances between the sticks – but he has not fallen as far as Loris Karius has under Klopp. That has turned out to be some sort of poisoned chalice for the Belgian as he finds himself stuck firmly as the number two option at Anfield and with no chance of usurping his Brazilian counterpart in the starting XI. He is at an age where he really should be playing on a regular basis and there would no doubt be a number of suitors keen on snapping up his signing if he was allowed to leave. Right now, it seems as though he is stuck in purgatory on Merseyside and only the arrival of a new goalkeeper to push him down the pecking order will give him the chance to leave. It seems strange that a player with 22 caps for his country would want to be leaving a team as huge as Liverpool but for Mignolet it is all about the playing opportunities.
